It’s a lot of fun to mix things up and see what the Midjourney bot might surprise you with.

Midjourney Beginners” is a series of articles written for readers who are just getting started with Midjourney.

Anyone can make beautiful images with a few simple steps.

No complicated things here.

Blend images in Midjourney like you mean it

Midjourney is pretty good at blending images. Actually, it's not just images; you can blend concepts, keywords, artistic styles, and pretty much anything visual you can think of.

What's really cool about image blending is how accessible it is for beginners. You can blend your photos, drawings, paintings, or images you've already created in Midjourney. The process is surprisingly straightforward once you get the hang of it.

New to image blending? Check out the Midjourney Official Documentation here.

Getting your images ready

Let me walk you through the blending process step by step. First, we need some images for blending. For this walkthrough, I'm using three example images that I grabbed from public archives:

  • A cockatoo

  • A Korean woman's illustration

  • A flamingo

I'll focus on using the website for blending in most cases. It's easier to use and way less restrictive and cumbersome than Discord. Discord can only upload and blend up to 5 images, but the website has no such restriction.

That said, Discord still has its role for more controlled blending that's currently not possible with the website (more about that later).

The basic blending process

Once you've got your images picked out, drag them into the image reference area. You can use one image or several, totally up to you and what you're trying to achieve.

Pro tip: Blending will work even without a text prompt, but always include one. If you don't specify what you want or set an aspect ratio, especially when your reference images are different sizes, the results usually look pretty rough.

Results of blending images without a prompt:

You may get black empty areas because the Midjourney bot doesn't know what to fill in, especially when your reference images have different sizes.

My go-to image blending workflow for better and faster results

Here’s my four simple steps blending workflow:

  1. Add a written text to control the blending process.

    1. The prompt guides the main elements while the images contribute style and mood. Without it, you're basically asking Midjourney to guess what you want.

  2. Managing the image links (URLs)

  3. Managing the parameters. Put everything in a nice, clear structure for easier manipulation.

    1. Activate your Personalization Profile for the best results in Midjourney V7.

  4. Paste the prompt on the website

Managing the image links

Pro tip: The simplest and quickest way to obtain all of the links to the uploaded image is to copy the prompt from any resultant image of the blend. You do not need to copy the image links one-by-one.

For any serious tweaking or adjusting the blending process, you will need to have all the image links/URLs ready.

Click any resultant image of the blend and copy the prompt.

This is the copied prompt:

The image links follow the order of the uploaded images. In our case, the right panel shows the flamingo first, followed by the Korean woman and the cockatoo.
