Turn on that Personalization Profile
Personalization is a core feature of Midjourney V7. It is so important that without it, V7 would be less appealing and even disappointing.
However, there isn't much information on how to properly personalize V7, other than forcing users to do so before starting it. Some existing users are frustrated because Personalization was an optional feature in the previous version and should not be made mandatory.
Anyway, Midjourney REALLY wants you to like the images you created in V7, so tell them what types of images you enjoy by ranking 200 images to refine your preferences and unlock Personalization.
You will like V7 once you have enabled Personalization. The image quality has greatly improved, as has the lighting and prompt adherence. You can think of the Personalization profile as your base model, guiding the Midjourney bot in making aesthetic decisions for image generation that are tailored to your preferences.
Types of Personalization Profiles
Personalization profiles can be divided into three types, each of which uses the --profile parameter.
Global Profile is the default profile, and you can only have one. This is the only profile in which liking another user's image on the Explore page affects your Global Profile.
Ranked Profiles are additional profiles that can be created to target specific styles and then used to rank image pairs.
Moodboard Profile allows you to train the model by uploading images of URLs.
This article will primarily cover Personalization Ranked Profiles. Official documents are available here.
Pro Tip: You are incentivized to like the images in the Midjourney gallery. This will help improve your Global Profile.
Things to know about Personalization Ranked Profiles
You can rename or delete each of your profiles.
It’s recommended that you name your profile, particularly if you have multiple profiles, as they can be confusing.
When you delete your profiles, you will be unable to enter new ranking data. However, existing profile codes will continue to work, and you can use them in the future.
You can improve your profile by ranking more images.
You can use the Personalization codes shared by other users. However, you cannot improve those codes because only the creator has complete control over them and can continue to rank images. (Note: Don't worry, all paid members will receive all of my new updated codes!)
Originally, each profile had only one profile code, such as --profile 7enzken, in the prompt. As you rank more images (more than the minimum of 200), the profile code will change to indicate that it has been updated.
The profile code update will not be reflected immediately. You can find a list of your Personalization codes on Discord by typing /list_personalize_codes.
You can stack the effects of multiple profile codes by placing them one after the other with a space. For example: --p 6odeoas 7enzken
The --profile parameter is also useful in its abbreviated form --p. For example, these two codes are identical: --p and --profile 6odeoas
When you click the "Use Profile" button, the --profile ID --p p1234567891234567895 is automatically converted to --profile code. For example, it becomes --p 6odeoas when you submit your prompt.
You can control how much the Personalization profile affects your images by using the --stylize parameter.
The Stylize parameters accept values from 0 to 1000. The default value is 100, which is applied automatically even if you do not explicitly specify it. Lower stylized values weaken the effect of Personalization, while higher values strengthen it.
When you reach the daily Top 2000 users with the most images ranked, you will be awarded one free fast hour of GPU time.
Questions beyond the basics
How many profiles should I have if I already have the global one? Is it sufficient for all types of images, or do I need additional Ranked profiles? For example, should I create separate Ranked profiles for photographic images, illustrations, horror, fantasy, sci-fi, cartoons, and so on?
What is the best method for ranking images? Should I just choose images that I find interesting or beautiful without thinking about them based on reflexes, as the V7 announcement suggested? (Midjourney asks users to rank images in under five minutes to create a Personalization profile.) Will doing so result in a good Ranked profile?
How do you know whether a profile is good or bad? What are the criteria for determining whether a profile is good after ranking about 200 images?
To answer all of the questions, I conducted a series of extensive experiments that resulted in 8 different personalization profiles: some general, some focused on illustration, some on photographic images, and some on other specialized themes. Each profile includes at least 200 images.
All of these profiles took a long time to create, sifting through images to produce the so-called "ideal profiles" to see what would happen and what the takeaways would be from these experiments. I’ll share with you all the profile codes.
Let's go.
