Some Midjourney features are only accessible through multi-prompting.

“Midjourney Beginners” is a series of articles written for readers who are just getting started with Midjourney.

Anyone can make beautiful images with a few simple steps.

No complicated things here.

Multi-prompt is odd

The multi-prompt is an unusual one. It's not a Midjourney command or a parameter. Sometimes, it's supported by the website, and other times, it only works on Discord.

It's just… there.

Many advanced users love it. Some intermediates and beginners may be intimidated by it.

It was quite popular in Midjourney V5.2 but received less attention in V6.1. At the time of writing this article, the Midjourney developers had updated the official documentation stating that multi-prompting is supported in V6.1 on both website and Discord. (It was not in the documentation few weeks ago!)

When used excessively, multi-prompt can become quite complicated. When used sparingly, however, it can be straightforward and effective.

In general, one can avoid multi-prompt altogether and still use Midjourney effectively.

Some advanced functions in Midjourney V6.1 are only accessible through Discord's multi-prompt system. However, as the website becomes more powerful with each update, the majority of the features that work on Discord will also work on the web.

What is a multi-prompt?

promptlet one::1 promptlet two::3 promptlet three::4 --v 6.1

For example:

On Website
dog::1 cat::3 pig::4 --v 6.1

OR

On Discord
/imagine prompt: dog::1 cat::3 pig::4 --v 6.1

This is a valid prompt.

The prompt is divided into three parts: dog, cat, and pig. The numbers (1, 3, and 4) represent the weights or relative importance of the words (dog, cat, and pig). A higher weight indicates greater importance.

The "/imagine prompt" command has been added for Discord prompting purposes. On the website, that should be removed.

  1. A multi-prompt consists of several promptlets (at least two).

  2. A promptlet is a single prompt section within a multi-prompt, separated by double colons (::). (No spaces between the colons). E.g. “dog::1” is a promptlet. “pig::4” is another promptlet.

  3. The double colon serves as a container, separating one promptlet from the others.

  4. The information stored in each promptlet will be considered separately from the other promptlets.

  5. However, all promptlets from a multi-prompt will be blended to form an image.

  6. Think of multi-prompts as a blender. It combines or blends all of the information in each promptlet to create an image.

  7. The double colon in the final promptlet is optional.

  8. "Multi-prompting" or "multiprompting" refers to a prompting method that employs multiple prompts.

  9. Promptlets are also referred to as baby prompts, prompt segments, or prompt fragments.

  10. There are additional "rules" (or factors) that influence the outcome of multi-prompting. To keep things simple, we'll tackle that in another future article .

In Midjourney V6.1, multi-prompt is primarily used to assign weight to promptlets, indicating their relative importance in comparison to other promptlets in the prompt.

If you're wondering, the prompt example above could generate this image grid. If you reroll the prompt multiple times, images of cats will appear. I will explain why in the sections below.

dog::1 cat::3 pig::4 --v 6.1
dog::1 cat::3 pig::4 --v 6.1
